Kansas Babies

Four weeks ago today on November 19 (and 6 days before Thanksgiving), my wife Marci and I waited in Merriam, Kansas's Shawnee Mission Hospital for the birth of our 3rd grandchild. Viola May arrived at 9:10 PM, already mixing up her days and nights. She was worth the wait. She weighed 7 lbs 10 oz. Our daughter, Staci, and her husband, Bret, are doing as great as Viola. All five of us are blessed.

Since this is a history site, I should probably attach some mention of history to this thinly veiled proud-grandpa notice............How's the following July 2, 1854 note from the Santa Fe Trail Diary of John Davies?

"At Indian Creek my wife gave birth to a daughter between 12 and 1 AM and at 8 o'clock we rouled (sic) out again..."

Please no cracks about Santa Fe Trail HMOs.............just let that diary entry sit in your imagination for awhile..............1 AM; birth...........8 AM; back on the trail............ The Indian Creek campsite mentioned in the diary is in Lenexa Ks, a mere 5.5 miles, but 156 years, from Staci and Viola's delivery room.

I think I will say another prayer of Thanksgiving.
